Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL) constituted the sole agenda item, in the context of the Report from the Assessment Task Force. Ann Henderson provided background on discussions relating to CTLs, noting that the COACHE survey revealed concern among junior faculty about a lack of opportunity for sharing and exploring teaching strategies. Ann next reported on her research into CTLs at other institutions, outlining five prinicpal functions: 1) Consultation, 2) Resources, 3) Events, 4) Funding, 5) Mentoring. Some CTLs are for faculty only, some integrate student academic support, e.g., writing centers. Various other relationships exist with library, IT, etc. Assessment is not explicitly included among the functions of CTLs, although points of intersection have been recognized. Some CTLs actively support scholarship about teaching, e.g., by sponsoring journals. Ensuing CEPP discussion explored: Funding opportunities. Foundations are now looking with particular favor on consortial arrangements, although consortia have not played a significant role in the CTLs Ann surveyed. Space needs. Not pressing in this case, although central location of a CTL office can send an important message. Shift of some social functions away from Case Center might provide an opportunity there. Relative priority vis a vis a Director of Assessment. CTL appears of greater interest to CEPP at present and is likely to gain more support among faculty. Susan Kress emphasized that it would not be a repudiation of the Report from the Assessment Task Force if CEPP were to concentrate on CTL this year. However, CEPP should also recognize responsibility for addressing the question of how we are to conduct formal assessment. Meeting was adjourned at 6:30.
