The meeting opened with a discussion about assessment and how this committee should respond to the VPAA’s request to return to CEPP to discuss assessment. It was noted at this time that there continues to be a lack of clarity regarding assessment. We will extend an invitation to Susan Kress to join us at our next meeting and will ask her to bring members of the Assessment Task Force who would be willing to answer our questions. We then turned to a discussion regarding the Center for Teaching and Learning. Center for Teaching and Learning. Each member of CEPP wrote proposals for their visions of a center. Different models for a center were discussed. Discussion ensued regarding what the center would include: whether it would include research opportunities, a writing center, faculty development opportunities and grant writing. The question also arose about what place there would be for students in the center. Other institutions vary in what they include and whether their centers are for faculty and students or just for faculty. Questions included: should the center be a broad umbrella for teaching and research? Should we consider it a center for faculty development writ large? It was agreed that when considering a Center for Teaching and Learning we should start small and grow as the need grows. Guidelines for framing how we envision the Center include: Providing assistance to those interested in the scholarship of teaching Including faculty development, mentoring, grant writing for pedagogy and research Securing funding for faculty development over the career of a faculty member Muriel Poston agreed to synthesize the proposals and present her findings at the meeting of October 30.
