The minutes from the October 23 meeting were unavailable for approval. CEPP discussed and unanimously approved the motion to break up the Art and Art History Department into distinct entities. A CEPP member asked when this was to be effective; the working assumption is Fall 2008. The Chair reminded the committee that it is hosting a forum on this issue on Friday, November 16 at 9:00 AM in Emerson. CEPP then discussed assessment and how to respond to the Assessment Task Force report. Much debate ensued. Some CEPP members advocated moving relatively quickly on this matter, that is, writing a response to the report for the VPAA, which would include recommendations about how to proceed. Others suggested that there was no sense of urgency to this matter and counseled further study and discussion. As in the past, some CEPP members put forward that when discussing assessment the committee should also think about a Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Some committee members replied that withholding or delaying CEPP’s response to the ATF report unless there was linkage to a CTL was a problem and imprudent, and that CEPP needs to address the matter before it and not “hold it hostage” in the hopes of administration promises for a CTL. CEPP also discussed what role the faculty at large should have in this process, especially in light of the VPAA’s previous comment that she was uncomfortable with a forum on this issue, because she did not want to give the impression that doing something was “debatable.” A CEPP member noted that it was “morally wrong” not to involve the faculty in this process. Ultimately, it was agreed that the CEPP Chair would try to get on the agenda of the November 2 faculty meeting to report that CEPP has received the ATF report and is in the process of formulating a response, that it plans to post the ATF report on its web site, and would welcome faculty feedback on the report.
